Dr Wong Tien Yin & Dr Chia Shi Lu (former President's scholars) who studied medicine in NUS to that list, who also served NS as M.O.s after their bachelors degree.
So it's very clear that Dr Patrick Tan DID receive special treatment to study medicine in the US (which was unprecedented then) with a President's scholarship!!! ...and did not have to undergo military training in MOCC!

By getting a 12 year disruption, does that not effectively shorten the actual period of Patrick Tan's reservist liability? Most Singaporeans start serving their reservist liability soon after their ORD, not when they are in their 30s.

More importantly, by not serving as a Medical Officer in the army (which is a Captain's rank), but only serving as a 3SG, doesn't he get the benefit of a discharge of reservist liability at the age of 40, instead of 50 if he had been a Captain? So he would have 10 years less reservist liability than other NS men with medical degrees!
